Dr. Michael J. Pegg is a graduate from the Fuel and Energy Department at the University of Leeds, UK, his primary expertise is in combustion. He has more than 40 years of experience conducting fundamental and applied combustion-related research projects. On joining Dalhousie University (formerly the Technical University of Nova Scotia) he first worked in the Centre of Energy Studies (CES) where his primary role was the development of burners and characterization of flames in a pilot-scale furnace utilizing coal-oil, coal-oil-water, and coal-water mixtures as alternate fuels. His fundamental research focus as a Professor in the Department of Process Engineering and Applied Science has, for many years, been studying the hazards of dust, gas, and hybrid-mixture explosions. More recently he has investigated the dynamics of fire whirls and multicomponent pool fires.In 2023 he started to establish the Dalhousie University Hydrogen Applications Research Lab which had its “grand opening” on 26 February 2024. Major funding from an NSERC Alliance Mission grant on anthropogenic greenhouse gas research, and partnering with Eastward Energy and Iron Dog, testing of NG appliances on blends of NG-Hydrogen is now underway. Through Net Zero Atlantic’s ECT program and Mitacs, development of a prototype hydrogen-fuelled water heater and a micro-combined heat and power unit is underway.
