Mark Jurisic was born in the City of Sibenik, Croatia and immigrated to Los Angeles in 1970.  He attended Saint Anthony High School and went on to study at Long Beach City College. After his studies, Mark went to work at the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department where he earned the Medal of Valor in service as a Deputy for more than 15 years and served on the Association Board. 
 
He began his career as a longshoreman in 1997. Mark has served continuously on the Local 13 Executive Board for 19 years.  He has served as a Business Agent for more than 4 years, two terms as a Labor Relations Committee Representative and is the Chairman of the Technology and Jurisdiction Committee for the ILWU. Some of the other positions he has held include, Political Action Committee, Publicity Committee, Convention Committee, and representative to the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. He has also worked on local, state, and national political campaigns.  

Mark’s first passion is safety, and he is the chairman of the Joint Accident Prevention Committee (JAPC). He represents Local 13 at the National Maritime Safety Association (NMSA) where he has personally championed the use of better safety helmets and gloves to decrease accidents.  He was instrumental in developing safety protocols and implementing training processes contributing to the decrease in accidents and injuries on the waterfront.  He works directly with Union and Employer leadership on all safety issues and is consulted on all serious accident investigations, responding in person to most major incidents.

Mark is most proud of envisioning and championing the newly approved Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach Goods Movement Training Center that received multilevel government funding.  He has volunteered more than 20 years of his own time in addition to time in office toward this effort. Hydrogen conversion at the Port has become another passion of his. He is currently the point person at Local 13 in the development of hydrogen fuel for use throughout the waterfront. He was also appointed by the Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, as a Workforce Development Board Commissioner and has served more than 8 years on the Commission.
Mark is currently married and the father of 3 children, 3 stepchildren and grandfather of 20 grandchildren.  He lives in San Pedro, California.
